Banteay Srei Temple "Citadel of The Women"
- Date: Second half of the tenth century (967)
- Reign of Construction: Rajendravarman II and Jayavarman V
- Cult: Hinduism (dedicated to Çiva)
- Clearance Work: H. Parmentier and V. Goloubew in 1924
- Anastylosis: H. Marchal, 1931 to 1936
Background: Banteay Srei was built by Raja Guru Yajnavaraha for installation
Linga "Tribhuvana Maheçvara" in the year 967. A
special feature of the decoration was the use of a hard pink sandstone.
Architectural and
decorative features are unique and fine. A tapestry like background of
foliage covers the walls of the structures in the central group as if a
deliberate attempt had been made to leave no space undecorated. The
architecture is distinguished by superimposed pediments, motifs on the
frames of the arches and standing figures in the niches. Panels are
decorated with scenes inspired by Hindu epics.
It was discovered in 1914
by Lieutenant Marec and cleared by H. Parmentier and V. Goloubew in 1924;
and carried out the anastylosis by H. Marchal in 1931 to 1936.

Laksmi
is the consort of Vishnu and the goddess of good fortune and abundance from early times. She is also known as Sri and
symbolizes prosperity. Laksmi was born of the Churning of the Ocean of Milk. She is often depicted on a lotus (her symbol) pedestal and attended by two elephants sprinkling lustral water on her
with their trunks. The number of her arms and attributes vary, but they usually include a lotus and a conch. |
A most memorable and
comprehensive week´s tour for
our 2 families (a party of 10
made up of 4 adults and 6
energetic children aged between
6 years old and 14 years old, so
it wasn´t easy by any means!)
One family flew in from
Singapore and the other from
Japan, and on different days as
well, but Vivath in his
"laid-back" manner organised
things so well, it went
swimmingly. The hotel was
friendly and comfortable, food
delicious, tour itinerary
marvellous, Vivath (and San the
driver, a super and steady
driver at that) greeting us each
morning with smiles on their
faces inspite of a couple of wet
days.........cultural education
with great fun, we thoroughly
enjoyed ourselves! Highly
recommended, and absolutely
great value-for-money using
locals, which we totally approve
of!
